Feminine dresses and other clothing in authentic vintage style from The Seamstress of Bloomsbury
The Seamstress of Bloomsbury, to daily i Mondo Kaos simply called Bloomsbury, is a British vintage clothing brand that was founded in 2012. The brand designs and reproduces women's clothing in authentic 1940s style according to original drawings, giving the clothing a very special vintage touch!
I Mondo Kaos we've been carrying The Seamstress of Bloomsbury since 2014, when we found the brand and fell in love with their beautiful, feminine designs and flattering cuts straight away! We think The Seamstress Of Bloomsbury fits in perfectly Mondo Kaos because of the high quality of the clothes and fantastic fit, and of course also because of the brand's focus on authenticity in both designs and material, which creates a true vintage look right down to the detail.
The Seamstress of Bloomsbury stands for authentic details and original patterns with a modern fit
The story of The Seamstress of Bloomsbury dates back to 1939, when a young woman named Lillian Wells was apprenticed to one of Britain's leading high society dressmakers. Lillian quickly became firm to both design and sew, and it was not long before she had become a household name in the higher social strata at home and abroad - so well known that she was nicknamed 'The Seamstress of Bloomsbury'.
Lillian's beautiful designs were brought to life again in the early 2010s by her close friend Mike, who inherited many of her original drawings and designs, on the condition that he recreated them in her spirit. Mike kept his word and in 2012 he started the brand that he named The Seamstress of Bloomsbury, as a tribute to Lillian Wells. Mike and the team behind the brand put a lot of effort into making their designs as true to Lillian's drawings as possible, and everything from closing mechanisms and material to sewing details are like the originals - they have only changed size / fit to suit today's women.

All Bloomsbury's clothing is made in their signature fabric rayon crepe de chine. It is a natural material that feels soft against the skin and allows it to breathe. The texture of the rayon crepe it chine is absolutely amazing and it really adds an extra vintage touch to the clothes!

Vintage dresses from The Seamstress of Bloomsbury
The dresses from The Seamstress of Bloomsbury are simple and feminine in their expression and practical in their designs, like other dresses inspired by the early 1940s. Therefore, the dresses can also be used for several different occasions, depending on how you style them - especially their classic turn-on dress is the perfect 'day-to-evening' dress, where with accessories and a shoe change you can transform the dress from an office dress to a cocktail dress in a moment! On Bloomsbury's dresses you will find authentic details such as elegant draping and faux sarong (waterfall effect), creating a lot of form by very few means, just like in the 1940s.
Peggy - wrap-around dress in vintage style from The Seamstress of Bloomsbury - one of our bestsellers!
Bloomsbury's 'Peggy' dress is one of our favorites and bestsellers in Mondo Kaos, and we always have it in stock in different colors and prints. It's a classic 1940s wrap style with short puff sleeves, a nice lapel collar and a simple A-line skirt that has a very nice fall. Because it is a wrap style, you can decide how much you want to define the waist, and because the design of the dress is so simple, yet feminine and figure-shaping, you can style it in a myriad of ways - both in classic vintage style and in modern 2020 style! If you're going for an original 1940s look, you can for example wear the dress with a pair of seamed tights, retro lace-up boots and a low-waist cable knit cardigan.
Vintage blouses and shirts from Bloomsbury
Our selection of tops from The Seamstress of Bloomsbury consists of authentic 1940s blouses and shirts. All Bloomsbury blouses and shirts are very feminine and have beautiful details that are especially known from the 1940s, such as 'pussy bow' ties, puff sleeves, shoulder pads and Peter Pan collars, and they all fit perfectly with trousers and skirts with high waist.
Dance skirt in classic 1940s style from The Seamstress of Bloomsbury.
Last but not least, we also have a fantastic dance skirt in a classic 'fit and flare' model that is typical of the 1940s and was especially used for dance parties. The skirt sits at the waist and over the hip, and from there it goes out in wide wedges, which gives a fantastic swing when you turn it around - it is especially suitable for Lindy Hop and Swingdans!
